Shahnaz, a published author passionate about social advocacy, uses her platform to share relatable stories that address sensitive topics often overshadowed in society. Her debut novel, “Baby’s Breath,” endorsed by the Mental Health of America and featured as a Barnes and Noble Book of Fall, delves into the experiences of a young protagonist on the autism spectrum.

While classified as fiction, it centres on significant social issues, delivering a message of hope and empowerment. “I aim to create characters that resonate with readers, whom I affectionately call ‘lovely people,'” says Shahnaz. “Through my stories, I want them to know they’re not alone in facing life’s challenges.”

Her subsequent novels, “Foxglove” and “Birds of Paradise,” continue this trend. “Foxglove” explores the life of Anmol, a young man with dreams of wealth and overcoming his physical limitations caused by congenital kyphosis. “Birds of Paradise” celebrates the power of true friendship, showcasing how a friend can stand by another in their pursuit of justice. The titles, inspired by botanical wonders (“Baby’s Breath,” “Foxglove,” “Birds of Paradise”), organically integrate with the narratives.

Written in clear and accessible English, her novels are available across major online retailers like Amazon, Flipkart, and Kindle. A passionate advocate for youth engagement, she actively participates in podcasts, online author sessions, and writing workshops.

A Touching Encounter

During a recent book reading session for “Baby’s Breath,” Shahnaz experienced the profound impact of her work firsthand. A staff member, a Hindi teacher at the school, confided in Shahnaz about her eight-year-old autistic child, sharing her anxieties about societal judgment.

“Your talk instilled confidence in me,” the teacher shared tearfully. “I feel like I’m not alone.” This encounter underscores the importance of open communication and acceptance surrounding social issues.

Her novels serve as a call to action, urging the Indian government to prioritise social causes critical to a more inclusive society. Her message emphasises:

  • Increased awareness and acceptance for individuals with autism, physical disabilities, and those who have experienced trauma.
  • Mandatory therapeutic support systems for survivors of assault.
  • Improved infrastructure, including accessible community centres, senior care facilities, and well-equipped special needs schools and rehabilitation centres.

Shahnaz Zaidi stands ready to speak up for these crucial issues. Through her captivating stories, she sheds light on the harsh realities often shrouded in stigma, encouraging empathy and understanding.
